Chicken Fried Steak with Creamy Country Gravy is the definition of Southern comfort food. Tender beef steak is coated in a perfectly seasoned crispy crust, fried until golden brown, and smothered in a rich, creamy peppered country gravy.

Ingredients
  

For the Steaks
  • 4 cube steaks about 1½ pounds
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • Vegetable oil for frying
For the Country Gravy
  • ¼ cup reserved frying oil
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • cups whole milk
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste

Method
 

Step 1
  1. Pat the cube steaks dry with paper towels.
Step 2
  1. In a shallow bowl combine:
  2. Flour
  3. Garlic powder
  4. Onion powder
  5. Paprika
  6. Salt
  7. Pepper
Step 3
  1. Whisk together the eggs and milk in another bowl.
Step 4
  1. Dip each steak into the flour mixture.
  2. Then into the egg mixture.
  3. Then back into the flour mixture, pressing firmly so the coating sticks well.
Step 5
  1. Heat about ½ inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Step 6
  1. Carefully fry each steak for about 4–5 minutes per side until deeply golden and crispy.
  2. Transfer to a wire rack.
Step 7
  1. Carefully pour off all but ¼ cup of the oil.
  2. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
Step 8
  1. Slowly whisk in the milk until smooth.
  2. Season with garlic powder, black pepper, and salt.
  3. Cook until thick, smooth, and creamy.
Step 9
  1. Serve each crispy steak generously covered with hot country gravy.
